“The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee”.1

There are those that teach that the God of the Old Testament is not a God of love and compassion. This verse should debunk this contention.

God tells his people that he loves them with an everlasting love. His love, unlike ours, is eternal, unchanging and unconditional. God’s love for us is infinite and is never exhausted. His love is pure and holy and always has our good as its goal.

The direct result of the love of God is that he draws us to himself with lovingkindness, or his loyal love, unfailing kindness and devotion. There is no one as loyal as our God. No one so seeks our benefit as God. No one as truly kind as God.

God is holy, emphatically yes, but God loves with an eternal love and that love is expressed towards us: in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us; in that it makes us this own precious people; in that he truly cares for us…
