“As he came forth of his mother’s womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand. And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind?”1
Everywhere you go, people are in a hurry. Many of them are trying to get to a job they don’t like to get things they really don’t need. They pour out their lives at the altar of career…
What is the profit of all this labor? It is futility and emptiness. It is frustration and confusion. It breeds discontent and greed. All this labor is just like laboring for the wind.
When man lives for self, he lives for the most disappointing and empty of idols. He will never be satisfied with the work of his hands and when he dies, he will leave it all behind.
A little later in Ecclesiastes the writer states:
Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;2
This makes all the difference: in your life, and in your labors, focus upon the One who created you. It is only in a living, vital relationship with the God of the Bible that you will find true purpose and satisfaction. And it is not too late, compared to eternity, you are now in the days of your youth…
