“My times are in Your hand…

“My times are in Your hand; Deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from those who persecute me.”   (Psalm 31.15)

Someone has summed up this verse in the following way: all my life, with its ‘sundry and manifold changes,’ its joys and sorrows, its hopes and conflicts, are not the sport of chance, or the creatures of a blind fate but are in Thy hand.

David speaks of times. The Hebrew word “times” refers to points of time or to the events of life. The word is plural and thus covers all the circumstances of our lives. This means that our entire life is in God’s hands, whether in the hardness of adversity or in the ease of prosperity.

All these times are appointed times made by the hand of our God. When we come to accept this fact, we can then commit our circumstances to God’s sovereign control. Because of that commitment, we can be sure of ultimate deliverance. “Deliver” means to pull out or to save. No matter what we are facing today, our loving, Heavenly Father will eventually rescue us.

I like what Dr. McGee wrote:

“My times are in thy hand”—and those are crucified hands. I can see my sin in His hands. And they are the tender hands of a Shepherd. He picked up a lost sheep and put it on His shoulders. My care and protection are in those hands. Some future day He is coming with blessing, and those hands will bless. I rejoice that my times are in His hands.
